What a combined grade classroom looks like at Orchard Valley, and why we chose it.
In a Waldorf school, the main lesson is normally taught grade by grade, with each age getting blocks matched to its stage of development. Orchard Valley began working with combined models in 2017. Since the fall of 2025, the grades program has used fixed Grade 1/2, Grade 3/4, Grade 5/6, and Grade 7/8 classrooms. Teachers have adjusted the main lesson block schedule to reach both ages in the room.
Grades share rooms in pairs: Grade 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. A teacher plans blocks for both ages, so younger and older children work side by side on the same subject. Parents see mixed ages in one room, older children helping younger ones. Ask the school how the day is paced.
Many Waldorf schools are rural, with fewer children in each grade, and combined classrooms are increasingly seen as a workable model in that setting. Children in a combined room get the flexibility and richness of a mixed group. Older children practice leading and explaining. Younger ones watch what the next year holds. Parents often notice their child settling into a steady group of learners across two ages.
